Farewell to Jean Harvey

Farewell to Jean Harvey

DSCN0985Recently, we waved a fond farewell to our longest serving employee. Jean Harvey worked at Stockdales for an impressive 38 years and did a number of roles during that time. With an ever growing family and a background in nursing, Jean started her journey with us back in 1978. She began as a part-time senior worker caring for children with disabilities  at 34 Harboro Rd in Sale, which is our main site today.

When we chatted to Jean about her time at Stockdales she recalled, “After my 4th child, I thought I might be a stay-at-home mum, but wanted to work to help support my family. I worked shifts which complimented my commitments at the time, so it worked well. It was much different back then, the residential house was fairly basic but it was full of love and it wasn’t just a job. The houses are far from basic these days, but the love has remained in abundance and the way I felt about the job stayed the same.”

Jean went on to say, “No two days have been the same. Attitudes towards disability have certainly changed over time and Stockdales were and are leaders in that locally. They have always been committed to giving the best service to people and their families.”

JeanAfter a couple of years in post, Jean changed her shift pattern to suit the needs of her family, gradually picking up more hours until she became full-time. In 1999, she was appointed Service Manager in Harboro, which was the charity’s residential service for children and young people at the time. Jean stayed in this role for 10 years before deciding to reduce her hours when she undertook a variety of other roles within the organisation.

Jean said, “The last 38 years have been a really happy time for me on the whole. Of course, there have been some really sad times too, that’s the unfortunate part of care. I have met some truly amazing people in colleagues, the people Stockdales supports and their families and carers. I was lucky to support service users abroad to America, France and Lapland in Iceland. Other highlights included the countless parties and special occasions I was privileged to be a part of. It’s been an amazing journey!”

Jean 2We would like to thank Jean for her dedication, commitment, professionalism, sense of fun and exceptional hard work during her time with Stockdales. It has been a privilege to work with her and we will all miss her immensely. Jean has made a unique and lasting contribution to Stockdales and has had a positive impact on the lives of all the residents, service users, staff and families she has helped over the years. In addition to her incredible competence and skill, Jean has been a friend to all with her thoughtfulness and quiet encouragement, combined with a devilish sense of humour and fun.

Thanks for 38 years!
